What to Look for When Buying a Girl Sleeping Bag

My Review

If you're looking for a girl sleeping bag there are quite a few things you should know in order to buy the best girl sleeping bag.  You want to make sure to buy the best sleeping bag you can buy at the cheapest price. Everyone loves a good deal or a bargain. Many bags are available at a good discount.  You want to get a good quality sleeping bag too.

Two Types of Sleeping Bags - Mummy Bag and Rectangular Bag

There are basically two types of girl sleeping bags.  They're the blanket style or also called rectangular and the mummy bag as they're called.  The blanket style opens up easily and the mummy sleeping bag is not rectangular but is the standard bag that has been around for many years that has been used by children, teens and adults.  There are also two person bags but they are harder to find for kids. There are zip together bags and double sleeping bags.

Two Types of Sleeping Bags - Indoor and Outdoor

Then there are two other choices to make. Do you want an indoor sleeping bag or an outdoor sleeping bag? There is quite a big difference. If your girl just needs it for indoor use, for example, staying overnight at a friend's house or for slumber parties or sleepovers, or on a bed or bunk bed at a summer place or cabin, then an indoor bag will be the best choice.

If your girl needs the sleeping bag for outdoor use, for example for camping trips or seasonal camping, for sleeping outside with friends or for summer or winter camps then you'll want to choose the warmer outdoor bags. There are also bags called 3 season and 4 season. The temperature rating will be important.

What Material is Sleeping Bag Made Out Of?  Fabric - Materials -  Polyester - Cotton - Down - Goose Down - Silk

The material or fabric in sleeping bags is usually tough synthetic polyester for the outside that can withstand all types of harsh treatment and weather conditions - especially for the outdoor bags.  The inside of the bags or liners are usually a soft, cozy cotton flannel made of 100% cotton but some liners are polyester. There are also down sleeping bags and goose down bags. There is ThermoTech insulation and can be 2 pounds of it in a kid's bag. It will be good down to 50 degrees at night.

Look for outer material such as Dry Loft, microfiber polyester, ripstop nylon, nylon, polyester and taffeta. For the filler or fill material look for Primaloft One, Thermalite and Polarguard. These are the best materials for your sleeping bag in order to give your child warmth and security through the night.

Many people think the down bags may be better.  However -- one thing to consider is the possibility of allergies to the down.  The down actually leaks through the fabric because the down is so fine.  There is no way to retain it.  Your girl-child or teen can breathe it and get it into her lungs.  As a nurse I worry about asthma bronchitis and other respiratory problems.  I think it’s better not to get a down sleeping bag.  The same goes for pillows. Silk is hard to find in a kid's bag. Look for good quality zippers that are durable.

Sleeping Bag Weight

Bags come in different weights. They will be heavier if you buy a winter sleeping bag.  Lighter for a summer bag.  They come in lite, ultra light or ultralight or, lightweight depending on the manufacturer.

Sleeping Bag Bags and Cases to Hold Them

You can get cases or bags to put your girl sleeping bag into.  This is a good idea to keep the bags clean and from getting wet.  Sleeping bags are often tossed around without any thought to the germs they pick up or get into puddles or in the rain.  You don't want them set aside to mildew somewhere. There are also bags called travel bags that come with elastic straps to hold your child's bag.  They come in backpacks also and are compact.  Waterproof bags are best if you can find them. Fabrics are usually machine washable and won't shrink.

Girl Sleeping Bag Styles - Fashion

Your little or big girl may have some definite ideas about what colors or patterns she wants. Pink, orange and purple bags are popular and there are many other colors to choose from. There are many patterns and designs and they can be stylish if that's important to you - both on the outside and the inside liner. They come with Winnie the Pooh characters such as Tigger, other characters, starbursts, butterflies, angels, princesses, ballet dancers, horses, ponies, bears, cats, kitties, flowers, buttercups and other patterns. Bright colors are good, especially for outdoor bags so a child can be spotted easier. You can even get personalized bags if you want.

What You Want in a Sleeping Bag for Your Girl, "Kid" or Child -

You want to consider a bag that has room for growth - that they won't grow out of in the next few months if possible.  You want a bag large enough to give them this room to expand, you want it to be warm and offer warmth at night along with comfort.  You want it soft and able to withstand any rough treatment it might get.  It should be easy for the child to carry and of good quality.

Look for durability and easy care- for good washing instructions and that it won't shrink.  Although most bags should not shrink.  The major difference between boys and girls sleeping bags is the color and designs.  So if you have a boy who needs a sleeping bag you can use all you read here as a guideline except you may want to change the color, designs or patterns.

A  26" wide and 60" long bag should fit a girl up to 4' 11" or so.  A 26" x 66" bag will fit most kids up to 5'2".  Make sure the bag has plenty of wiggle room for her feet - box corners are best. Look for rolled-top hem and fibrelock stitching that will help insulation-- so there won’t be any cold spots or lumps.

Girl Sleeping Bag Manufacturers

The most commonly known are: Wildkin, Bazoongi Kids, Fireside Comforts, Sunbeam, Cricketzzz, Smooth Industries, Marsupium, Sugar and Spice, Cellcorp Fairy Princess, North Face, L.L. Bean, Pottery Barn Animal sleeping bags and Coleman including their Scattered and Catnap bags.

Girl Sleeping Bag Price - Cost

You can usually get good girl sleeping bags for $12 on up. You will probably pay for what you get. But you can skimp more on an indoor bag than an outdoor bag which must be strong and more durable. Look for discounts, sales and you may be able to get them wholesale if you have a good source.

Choosing a well-constructed, cute, cozy, warm and the best girl sleeping bag for your daughter, (niece or as a gift) that she can easily roll up and carry, will make it snuggly and fun for your girl - child, princess, angel, youth, preteen or teen or teenager.  And whether for summer or winter, or any season you want the bag to last, and also get the best price and you'll assure them of a good night's sleep or slumber!
